This school year has raced by and we can hardly believe it is almost over. On Friday, May 29, we held our Accelerated Reader Year-End Celebration. Our theme for this school year has been “Soaring Higher With Reading!” That's exactly what we did. We were fortunate enough to have Randy Lee of Carolina High Hot Air Balloon Company, from Benson, NC bring the “Spellbound Spirit II” hot air balloon to us at school. All students who met their year-long reading goal came to a demonstration and information session about hot air balloons and later enjoyed balloon themed games during the AR Fun Day. It was an awesome experience and we still can't quite get over how big the balloon was. We learned that the colorful, upper part of the balloon is called the envelope and that it can hold 105,000 fully inflated regulation size basket balls! 163 students met their Accelerated Reader goals and took part in the event. A very special thank you is extended to Mr. Lee for bringing the “Spellbound Spirit II” to us and to Mr. Jimmy Haynes and Mr. Larry Bullock, our custodians for stepping in to be Mr. Lee's crew and helping with the setup and breakdown of the balloon.

Wow! It's May and the school year is marching quickly to a close. As usual, things are very busy with lots of events happening every week. Just a few weeks ago, we had a visit by Pete The Cat. He is the character from the famed Pete The Cat Series of books written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. He was accompanied by guests that read several of the Pete The Cat books to our pre-K and kindergarten students. This visit was made possible by Smart Start and we are so appreciative of their work to have Pete The Cat come and encourage our students in reading. Our Elementary Battle of the Books (EBOB) team competed in the first annual District EBOB competition on April 25. We are pleased to say we came in second place, but are already gearing up for a great battle for next year. The list of books has already been release and students are starting to read to get ready! Last week students in first and second grade had field trips to Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park in Scotland Neck. What an incredible field trip! Students enjoyed seeing many types of birds up close. We encourage you to take a trip to there if you have never been. Next week, our last Family Reading Night of the school year is being held. This is a great opportunity to come out and read with your child and watch as they take Accelerated Reader Tests. We look forward to seeing you! Also, Field Day will be held next Friday. First District EBOB Competitions- May 7, 2015

*This post also appeared in The Warren Record Newspaper* Warren County Schools held its first annual District Elementary Battle of the Books (EBOB) Competition on April 25, 2015 at Warren County Middle School in the multi-purpose room. The district competition is the culminating activity for a year- long reading program that is designed to encourage reading for students in the fourth and fifth grades. The North Carolina State Library Media Association EBOB Committee releases a list of eighteen books that represent quality literature of varying viewpoints and literary styles by outstanding authors of literature for young adults. Participating students ' gain knowledge of a broad range of topics, vary their choices of reading materials, improve reading skills, and enjoy the excitement and fun of competition. The program's history can be traced back to a similar type of program initiated by Ruth Harshaw in the 1940's on a public radio program. Congratulations is extended to the students of Mariam Boyd Elementary School's team who won first place. They are: Logan Bowen, Nakira Bullock, Jada Daniels, Chase Davis, Lea Fraiser, Justin Harris, Destiny Henderson, Gerard Hyman, Everton James, George Joseph, Justyce Juliano, Savannah Oswald, Mckenzie Robinson, Kiara Watson, and Demetrius Bullock. Congratulations is also extended to the students on the Vaughan Elementary School team who came in second. They are: Dameon Bailey, Steven Brame, Raheim Cooper, Harley Daeke, Janet Medina, Carson Minter, Dais Minter, Josiah Paynter, Kara Richardson, Kelsey Wester, Taylor Wells, Cristian Williams, and De'Asia Williams. All of the elementary school teams are already reading to prepare for next year's program. The program was a great success. Trina Paynter, Vaughan Elementary's Media Coordinator and the District Competition Coordinator would like to extend a very special thank you to Cheryl Sebrell, who served as the moderator, Barbara Brayboy and Harriet Faulkner who served as judges, Marion Barnes who served as scorekeeper, Takiera Mayo, who served as the assistant scorekeeper, Cecilia Luna, who served as timekeeper, Asia Baskerville and Mary Mach, who served as ushers, Jamar Perry, who served as the District Contact to receive questions, and Patsy Tucker for assisting with set up and serving of refreshments. There would not have been a competition without your willingness to serve! This year, the program was funded by a grant from the Warren Education Fund. The grant paid for a copy of each of the eighteen books on the NCEBOB list for each of the four elementary schools, polo shirts for participating students to wear for competition and to school, trophies and medals, and refreshments at the district competition. The total ongoing cost to continue to fund this program for each school is approximately $900 per elementary school. Each participating elementary school is seeking donors to assist with sponsoring the program at their school. If you are interested in donating, please contact the Media Coordinator at the school you would like to sponsor for more information.

Vaughan Elementary School News – February 2, 2015

It's hard to believe we are already starting February and what a fabulous February it is. The last few weeks have been a very busy time at Vaughan. On Thursday, January 22nd, we held our Math and Guidance night. Miss Comer, our guidance counselor began the evening with information for our parents about motivation, bullying and homework helps. Then parents went to the grade level of their choice to learn more about the math curriculum that their students must master. Grade-level teachers shared strategies, websites and even helped parents brush up on some of their long-forgotten math skills. As a bonus, every parent that attended received a door prize of triangle math flash cards. We all had a wonderful time! If you were unable to make this event, please call Miss Comer or your child's teacher and they will be glad to send some resources home for you. Last week we held our annual Science Fair. We had almost 100 entries in the categories of demonstrations and experiments. Students presented some of the best projects we have seen. A special thanks is extended to Sam Moseley, Dr. Linda Mason, Carolyn, Harris, and Lynne Lassiter for serving as our judges. Winners in the Experiments category were: 1st place, Kenyon Richardson - “Soil Erosion”, 2nd place, Chaliyah Richardson - “Alligator Wire, Negative or Positive?”, 3rd place, Harley Daeke- “My Garden Is Sick!”, Honorable Mention, Noah Davis - “First in Flight”, Honorable Mention, Jacy Mills- Bubble Trouble”. Just as in every other area of life, we finish one task and move on to the next. This school year is working out to be just that way. Last Thursday night, Vaughan held it's annual Fall Festival. Due to overwhelming support from our parents and community members, it was a great success. So many people helped out in so many ways and we cannot thank you enough. A very special thanks is extended to all of the community businesses who donated money, gift certificates and wonderful gifts for both our raffle ticket fund and our Chinese Auction. Thanks is also extended to the parents who made snacks for the Sweet Shop and cakes for our Cake Walk as well as to those who came out to help us set up and clean up. It is often hard when you are tired to stay to the end to ensure that everything is presentable for the next day. We really appreciate your efforts in this area. Thank you is also extended to parents Mr. Moriarty and Mr. Jenkins for running game booths during the event.

Our Pre-Kindergarten students have been very busy in an educational unit focusing on shapes. As a culminating event, these students went of a field trip to Pizza Inn to discuss all the shapes that can be found in and around a meal in a restaurant. A great time was had by all. Thank you to Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Watson for working so hard with our “Baby Eagles.”

This week we will be holding our Fall Parent Conferences on Thursday, November 4 from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm. If you have not received a notice from your child's teacher to schedule a time, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible. It is very important to keep the lines of communication open between home and school. Due to conferences, school will be dismissed early both Thursday, November 4 and Friday, November 5 at 1:00 pm. Please make plans for your children accordingly.

Next Tuesday, students meeting their Accelerated Reader goals for the first nine weeks will be rewarded at a popcorn party. We can't wait to see how many of our students will meet their goals! That night, Mrs. Bender will host a Parent Education Workshop on Science Fair Projects at 6:30 pm. This workshop will focus on preparing parents for how to help their children complete a science project for the Science Fair to be held in February. We encourage all parents in grades 3-5 to attend. Next week, elementary schools will be observing the Veteran's Day Holiday on Thursday, November 11. There will be no school on this day.
